For light weight without too much tone loss, I really like the Telonics... but I recently paired a P2P tube amp with the PF 350 12" speaker.... really a nice full sound. But heavy. :)

fwiw, I am trying a Celestion Copperback as an alternative to my JBL K-120. It's in a Coscia Jerry-style cab, powered by a Milkman The Amp 100. First band practice this week. My take was that it's obviously in the JBL tonal camp, but not as good (nothing is, probably). Highs are brighter and not as smooth, and low mids aren't as full-sounding. It's also not as loud, despite being 4 ohm, pushing the amp to 200 watts. I wound up tweaking the eq and using the boost to compensate, but it still felt a little short.

Bass player has the best ears in the band and sits in direct line with my speaker, and he actually quite liked it. In the end, I don't think anyone but me would notice in a gig situation.

On the big plus side, it shaved nine full pounds off the cab and greatly improved its balance. Very noticable and very good!

That said, I think I'll be looking for other neo speakers that might be closer to my JBL.

I always revert to a speaker's specific frequency range chart and compare it to a JBL, BW and Eminence. The charts narrow down the field.
1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Ibanez Analog Mini Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8.

Best 12” speaker

Post by Joe Bill Moad »

I am a newbie on here but I do know that every speaker cabinet I own that are Fender consoles or speaker cabinets Have 12” JBLs. With Alinco magnets. No Ceramic magnets on my stage. And the Peavey Bassman head has a 15” Black Widow which literally Blows Smoke! My other Peavey 300 console has a 15” Black Widow that I play my 1947 Hammond B-3 through. Talk about sound. My Magnatone lap steel early 50’ model plays through a kit 59 tweet amp wired just like the 59’s back in the day with 2 JBL 120’s with the Alnico magnets in it! Man that lap Screams Bob Wills and even blues tunes magnificently ! Hope this helps everyone’s JBL and Black Widow questions? Kenny Vaughn who plays lead for Marty Stewart turned me on to the Alnico magnets in my speakers. Everyone that hears them at any volume says “WOW”!
