Western Swing transcriptions

Post by Pete Martin »

As I have seen so little in the way of Western Swing teaching material on the web anywhere, I have decided to transcribe some myself. In the "Non Pedal" section of the "Tablature" sub forum here I have posted a few solos from Eddie Rivers, Noel Boggs and Leon McAuliffe. So far 8 string A6 and Leons E13 tunings. Also linked the YouTube recording I got them from.

I am new to steel, but not new to transcribing solos, been doing it since the 70's. While I think most of the stuff here is accurate, I'm sure I've missed some things. Anyone who spots any errors, please let me know and I'll fix them ASAP.

And if you have any Western Swing transcriptions, feel free to add those. I would appreciate it, even if others don't!

Nice!

I have always thought that the B section of Blue Guitar Stomp begins with one of the trickiest licks in the whole repertoire. At first I thought it was a mistake but then he repeats it in the reprise. The opening notes are disorienting, giving a false impression of where one is. It is a really clever lick!

Thank you for sharing.

I have not seen much instruction for Western Swing either EXCEPT for Lessons by Troy has some great stuff. I love his lessons. They are VERY detailed and more valuable to me than any of the other lesson material I have worked with on the web.

This is really cool! I think most beginners wanting to learn Western swing are very quickly frustrated by the lack of resources. If you do a search of Guy Cundell's posts there are a number other free TABs to print. I printed off a whole stack along with everything from his thesis on the history of steel guitar.

This gets mentioned her often, but for general concepts the Eddie Rivers videos are really great and free on YouTube. This style of teaching suits me because it is just quick general ideas to get you playing and improvising. I have a really hard time learning anything from TAB on steel guitar, but with time, patience and practice I know it will get easier.

I posted what I transcribed from Western Swing rules #6 with Eddie. Lotsa good stuff in that video. I'll soon get to #8 and #11 with Eddie.
