Pot .Value

Post by Dave Hepworth »

Hi everyone,
I am renovating an old passive ,rack and pinion volume pedal.
Question ,
Will a 500K audio taper have a different taper / sweep compared to a 250K audio taper.

I am aware of high frequency losses in both values and will put a treble bleed cap across 1 and 2 terminals to help with this .
Just not sure of taper with them .Wanting smoothest volume increase.
Thanks for any advice .

The taper should be the same on both but the optimum impedance for a psg pickup not so much. 250k pots are fine for electric guitars with pickup impedances in the 6k-9k range, but most pedal steel guitar pickups are easily double that or more, which is why 500k pots are most common in psg volume controls.

There's no audible difference in the maximum/minimum levels between a 250k and a 500k. An audio taper will give you a smoother volume increase than a linear taper, but if both are audio taper, the only difference relates to Dave's comment about a 500k pot being a better load impedance for your steel than a 250k pot.
Long-time guitar player, now being cruelly mocked by a lap steel.

Hi All,
Many thanks for your replies.I opted for the 500K audio. All is working well on the pedal .I even used some twin and braided earth ( mic cable) to wire in and out to and from pot to keep things tidy and NO noise .Happy chappy.
