Speaker for Webb Advice

Post by Paul Hutzler »

I have a Webb 614E head and the cab has a JBL K1304ohm. I was recording the other day and the engineer heard a little distorted sound that he thought was indicative of maybe a blown speaker or other speaker issue. I like the sound if the K130 but it is a little old and wondered if there was a good alternative speaker you could recommend. Weight is not important. Sound quality is.

My advice, for whatever it's worth, is to contact our forumite speaker tech Jeffrey Maxwell in Amarillo Texas and hire him to repair/recone your K130. He can give you several options. His work is excellent and his turnaround time is very reasonable.

There are other speakers such as the JBL E130, possibly earlier Peavey 1501-4, Weber Neomag 15 etc. that will fit and work in your amp but in my estimation it's the JBL that makes the Webb amp shine.

I believe since Tom Bradshaw revived the Webb amp some years ago, and although that may be idling at present, he may have some advice as well.

Good luck however you proceed.

Although it was the stock choice the JBL K130 at 4 ohms is no match for the Webb's power, much better to run 8 ohms. The E130 seems to manage fine at 4 ohms but it's a lot heavier.
