Ambience Reverbs for Pedal Steel

Post by John Larson »

For those of us who like using very ambient reverb effects on our steel playing.

What pedals or effects are you using to achieve this?

I used the Walrus Slö for a while and then picked up a JHS Octave Reverb shortly after they were released.

The Old Bood Noise Endeavors Dark Light recently came on my radar and it seems to be a very deep pedal with almost no limit to the sounds that can be coaxed from it. It's two of their reverb pedals combined into one unit.

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

I use a NUX Atlantic for reverb and tap tempo delays.
Pitch fork has a killer chorus and will drop tune to E flat.
LEX for Leslie type effect.
Tom Bradshaw Resonator for DoBro effect.
Occasional Heavy Distortion.

The MXR reverb is really really good.

It has 6 different algorithms, including plate, spring, hall, room, and a very good synthy-sounding shimmer.

You can use it mono or stereo.

It is small and easy to use, and it covers all the bases I need. Very impressed with this one.

Keeley Caverns is also great for steel. Neunaber immerse is another one that’s really good.

I picked this up on the Forum a few months ago because the demos sounded so good and because I had a notion that I wanted to build a board specifically for ambient sorts of needs.
I immediately realized that it is far deeper and more complex to program than I have any business messing with. I think this was essentially why the seller was selling too.
But it goes to some great places.

I bought a TC Electronics “Arena Reverb” after it was recommended here on the forum by Bill Hatcher. It does everything I want it to do, and it was only $100. :)

I actually have the Specular Tempus and I use it on my synthesizers. Super deep effect. Lots of menu diving.
