3/16", 4.5mm too tight. 5/32 or 5mm? I don't have either on hand to try

The nylon/plastic tuning nuts should be 3/16" hex. And a 3/16" wrench fit proper.

Two things I have found that will change the size is.
Someone made the tuning nuts out of 5MM nylon electronic standoffs. !!!!!!!
Or someone got the small hole diameter tuning nuts. That were drilled for 7/64" size rods, Then force twisted them on a 1/8" rod. And now they now have a outside measurement that standard tuning wrenches Will Not Fit proper. !!!!!!!
Having to use multiple size tuning wrenches can be very aggravating.

Good Luck finding the problem and a cure, Happy Steelin.

It's best to use a 5mm on every pedal steel with 3/16 [4.76mm] nuts. It will fit the nylons just fine and there won't be any confusion if you change guitars.

Sometimes nylon nuts swell if a smaller id nut is used on a larger rod and other things happen along the way.

The 5mm will work on all of them. No need to even keep a 3/16 wrench in your kit.
